Liver elastography (fibroscan) is a painless, non-invasive method that quantitatively assesses the degree of liver elasticity, a method that has come to replace the older, invasive method of liver biopsy for the investigation of hardness/fibrosis and the quantitative measurement of fatty infiltration.
Various pathogens (such as hepatitis B, C, and D viruses), alcohol consumption, fatty infiltration (poor diet, diabetes, lack of exercise), certain hepatotoxic drugs, and more rarely metabolic syndromes (hemochromatosis, Wilson et al.) can be the cause of chronic inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) which creates progressive and gradual effects of fibrosis (scarring) of the liver.
