Essentially it is a microbiological examination of the fluids of the human body. It includes a range of diagnostic tests leading to the detection, isolation and identification of pathogenic microorganisms (common microbes and fungi).

If the culture is positive, i.e. pathogenic microorganisms are identified, then a further antibiogram is carried out.
This is a test that determines the sensitivity of pathogenic microorganisms to various antimicrobial drugs.
